Darth Vader vs. Darth Revan
Ok, so this post is about something that annoys the shit out of me. It's getting to the point where you can't go to a Star Wars forum without at some point seeing a "Darth Vader vs. Darth Revan" post. This in itself would not be so bad, if people weren't stupid enough to claim that Darth Revan could actually best Vader in a lightsaber duel. Granted, Vader is significantly less powerful post-suit than pre-suit, but it still doesn't make a difference. Recently, I found a quote from George Lucas about Vader's power:
"However, after all of his limbs were severed and he was extremely burned on Mustafar he lost much of his Force potential. As Darth Vader, Anakin was believed to have had roughly 80% of the strength of the Emperor. Had he sustained none of his injuries on Mustafar he would have been twice as powerful."
— George Lucas
I think we can all agree that Palpatine is the most powerful Sith Lord ever. Lucas said that Vader without the suit would have been twice as powerful as Palpatine, easily making him that much more ridiculously strong. But, since he's in the suit, he's only about 80% as powerful as Palpatine. Call me crazy, but being only 80% as powerful as the guy who basically dictated the Galactic political arena for at least 20+ years, who virtually wiped out the entire Jedi Order, and who did all of that right under the noses of the most powerful Jedi Council in recorded history is not a bad thing.
Now, we have Darth Revan, the Dark Lord of KOTOR fame. Here are some of the justifications that people have used for Revan beating Vader: (Note: all of the following are copy-and-pasted from various forum posts. They are unedited. Links can be provided if so desired.)
"He was never defeated in real combat by Jedi. Vader can't say the same"
"Vader on the one hand was the most powerful force wise, he would more then likely win in a duel between the two. On the other hand, Revan was also one of the greatest tacticians."
"So Vader, even pre-suit, could not beat Revan. revan would win because of his more experience and his abilities far outweigh Vader's abilities. Also, Revan was so powerful, he was thought to be the Sith'ari."
"go Revan"
My personal favorite is the last one. How can you argue with such beautiful logic? Anywho, I"ll address each separately. So Revan never lost in combat to Jedi. Whoppi doo. Neither have I, does that mean I can beat Vader? And think about it, who did Vader lose to? Obi-Wan Kenobi, his master and arguably the greatest duelist in the galaxy after Mace and Yoda, and Luke, who is basically everything Anakin could have been if he hadn't been over-confident on Mustafar. Not a bad track record, considering that makes Vader's record around 10,000-2. I don't think Revan's quite matches up. Percentage wise, he wins. But then again, so do I.
Vader would most likely win in a duel, but Revan is a great tactician? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only real way to determine who is more powerful would be to have them fight in an all-out duel utilizing all of their knowledge of the Force and lightsaber forms. He concedes that, under such a circumstance, Vader would beat Revan. Perhaps he's refering to a space battle of some type? Even then, Vader is recognized as the best starpilot in the galaxy. I don't recall Revan ever receiving that recognition. Any situation where tactics would play a pivotal role would be a fleet battle, which then eliminates the contest of two Sith Lords and creates a contest of who can order their underlings around better.
Revan might be the Sith'ari. Newsflash, so might Vader. The Chosen One and Sith'ari prophecies are often thought to be one in the same, so Vader has just as much claim to Sith'ari and Revan does, more so in fact because he is the Chosen One. As for Revan's abilities far surpassing Vader's, all I can do is laugh. A trained Jedi Knight who fell to the dark side in order to fight the True Sith is supposed to be more powerful than someone who was conceived by midi-chlorians themselves? I think everyone can agree that Yoda has more Force potential then Revan. Vader has more Force potential than Yoda. Therefore, Vader has more Force potential than Revan. Seeing as how Force ability and Force potential are virtually identical, Vader wins there. The only thing Revan has on Vader is experience, but then again, so did Dooku and Obi-Wan. Dooku's dead, and the only reason Obi-Wan won is because Vader was way too overconfident in his as-of-then uncontrolled power. The only plus for Revan isn't so much a plus as a draw.
All in all, a duel between Revan and Vader would be intense, probably more so than Obi-Wan and Vader's duel on Mustafar. Revan is easily in the Top 10 as far as Sith Lords go. The only problem is that Vader is a lot closer to the top then he is, and for good reason. Could Revan best a top duelist with relative ease, fight and kill around 20-30 Jedi in a few minutes, and keep up with third best duelist in the galaxy for an extended period of time? The answer is no. One final question to ask about ths match-up: Is Revan 80% as poweful as Sidious? Is any Sith Lord for that matter. The answer, yet again, is no. Thank you, and have a good whatever time fo day it is whereever you are.
